The nutritional value of royal jelly
When it comes to nutrient-rich food, there may be nothing more potent than royal jelly. The queen bee’s food, produced by the worker bees, is a thick, milky-white, creamy liquid that allows for the growth and nurture of the queen. It is full of nutrients that support all aspects of development and immunity, thus allowing all those that take it to thrive.
Royal jelly as an alternative medicine
Often a prescription in alternative medicine, this dietary supplement of royal jelly has everything for the body to survive, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vitamins. Its nutritional content is approximately 15% carbohydrates/sugars (the majority being the monosaccharides fructose and glucose), 15% proteins, 5% fatty acids, 60% water. It contains acetylcholine (a deficiency of which has been associated with Alzheimers’s disease), B-vitamins (including B5 – pantothenic acid, B3 – niacin, B6 – pyridoxine), 17 amino acids including all 8 essential amino acids, RNA, DNA and gelatin, all of which are important for growth. Of the fatty acids, the most important one is the queen bee acid or 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10HDA), as it is being studied for various immune and vascular functions.
Royal jelly, being a nutrient-rich whole food supplement, also contains the essential antioxidants of vitamin C – ascorbic acid, vitamin A – retinol, vitamin E – tocopherols, and some, including trace minerals. It is important to note that the vitamin A and E are more recent findings, as older literature indicates that it is devoid of all fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. Royal jelly is also relatively high in nucleotides that help in ATP production, which is why it is an excellent energy tonic. With a nutritional profile like this, it is no miracle that it can make bee larvae into the species’ queens.
It is no surprise that with all these nutrients, royal jelly helps not only with growth, but also increases energy, regulates anxiety, sleeplessness, and moodiness, improves memory, and develops the immune system. It is a regularly used prescription to support any allergy or asthma protocols, as long as one is not anaphylactic or allergic to bees.
Considered to be an adaptogen, it exerts a non-specific normalizing action on many organs and physiological functions. Due to its high amino acid content, it helps with the hormonal regulation of certain glands, including adrenal support and libido for both men and women. It is why it is a common addition to fertility protocols. The hormonal regulation is associated with the ovaries’ disorders, including premenstrual syndrome and pre- or post-menopause states, as well as the collagen found in the gelatin, helping to improve bone strength.
Due to its anti-aging properties, royal jelly has long been used to promote a youthful appearance by improving the elasticity within the skin. This is known to be due to its gelatin content and the amino acids, which help improve collagen structures.
It is often said in traditional medicine that “more research is needed”, but expert findings have shown that it also has great potential in the anti-aging process due to its ability to lower insulin signaling. This decrease in signaling has been shown to maintain health due to the effects of a reduced stress response, decreased systemic inflammation, and fat deposition.
Its amino acids and gamma globulins aid in strengthening the immune system. Royal jelly has also demonstrated an ability to lower total serum cholesterol levels and provide cardiovascular support. It is a nutritious hormone-rich substance with a broad spectrum of potential benefits for the conditions listed below:
